Knowledge Services Center
The Client: United States Agency For International Development (USAID)
The Issue: The USAID’s ambitious and demanding mission that integrates the activities of the USAID Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC), USAID Library, Research Services, and Knowledge Management into a single entity.
The Solution: LAC Group created USAID’s Knowledge Services Center (KSC), to bring together the best of library science, human factors engineering, and web technologies to deliver a cost-effective solution that provides USAID’s offices, researchers, and employees the right incentive to share knowledge, and the right methodologies and tools to organize and mine the knowledge that is collected. In addition to staffing a full-service Reference Desk during business hours, LAC Reference Librarians provide virtual service to USAID patrons and the public. We provide an orientation to the KSC as part of the Agency’s mandatory new employee briefings; hold open houses; participate in Agency knowledge fairs; and provide one-on-one and group training sessions in the use of resources available through the Library. We publish a monthly electronic newsletter that includes news of acquisitions, technology developments, and services.
To support the USAID mission, LAC Group provides experts in Economic Growth/Agriculture Development, Democracy and Governance, Humanitarian Assistance, Human Capacity Development, Health Populations and Nutrition, Environmental and Natural Resources, as well as several developmental generalists. Our researchers provide in-depth assistance to USAID HQ and field staff on specialized developmental queries, including annotated bibliographies, detailed analyses, and complex statistical reports, and we assist Agency staff with presentations.
Website Development and Population
The Client: Defense Acquisition University
The Issue: Through the Library of Congress’s FEDLINK program, DAU engaged LAC Group to lead the development and population of twenty-seven websites, each covering individual weapons systems, using licensed and public domain resources.
The Solution: LAC’s Data Gatherers sourced the information from a variety of resources including news reports, legislative records, and other unclassified government information. To minimize learning curves and take advantage of the intuitive nature of our solution, all websites are similar in construction, design, and content sources. Each website consists of online aggregated content, further identified and enhanced by using subject terms. LAC Group also provided Reference Librarians, responsible for the catalog/classifying of the documents. LAC assigned a Library of Congress Subject Heading, DAU Taxonomy term, and identified where each program is in its lifecycle.
LAC Group’s work was deemed highly successful, despite needing to deliver the 27 fully functional websites in less than 12 weeks.
